This red and golden whole grain dessert is a perfect balance of sweet apples and tart cranberries.

Ingredients

  • 4 apple, cored and thinly sliced (cored and thinly sliced)
  • 1 can (14 ounces) whole cranberry sauce
  • 2 tablespoons margarine, melted
  • 1 cup oatmeal, uncooked
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions

  1. Wash hands with soap and water.
  2. Preheat oven to 400 °F.
  3. Wash apples, remove cores and slice thinly, keeping peel on.
  4. In a bowl, combine the cranberries and apples. Pour into an 8x8 inch pan.
  5. Combine melted margarine with oatmeal, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well blended. Sprinkle over apple/cranberry mixture.
  6. Cover and bake for 15 minutes.
  7. Uncover and bake 10 more minutes until the topping is crisp and brown.
  8. Serve warm or cold.

to reply to the comment of margarine... it is cheaper and a lot of people have to make decisions to feed their family. I receive snap and have to make these decisions its my only way of buying groceries... i am disabled i am not able to work dr's orders

Great desert for the Fall, But...MARGARINE? Surely it's not on the SNAP food list! All those trans fats! Use real unsalted BUTTER or some good coconut oil. Or in a pinch some safflower oil. And try thin skinned apples like golden delicious to keep the fiber. Scrub well first if not organic or from your own tree.

Although leaving the peel on gave added nutrition it did not taste good or feel good to the palate. I would take off the peel next time and add flour to the topping.
