Chocolate Chip Yogurt Cookies

Add extra calcium to your cookies with yogurt. These cookies also use whole wheat flour which adds fiber and other nutrients.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup margarine (1 stick)
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt, non-fat
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (miniature, or carob chips)

Directions

  1. Wash hands with soap and water.
  2. Heat oven to 375 °F.
  3. In a large bowl combine sugar, brown sugar and margarine; beat until light and fluffy.
  4. Add yogurt and vanilla; blend well. Stir in flour and baking soda; mix well. Stir in chocolate chips.
  5. Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto un-greased cookie sheets. Bake at 375 °F for 8 to 12 minutes or until light and golden brown.
  6. Cool 1 minute, remove from cookie sheets.

SNAP recipients questioned how it was possible to make this recipe for the cost listed of $1.86. The cost of just the chocolate chips exceeded $1.86.

Cookies do not spread while they are cooking but that may be because I only had butter and the recipe called for margarine. I will make it again to see if this change in ingredients matters and I will rate it again.

Although the nutrition label on this recipe says 0g of trans fats, the recipe calls for margarine which is typically a trans fat product. The recipe should specify margarne that is trans fat free or why not go with butter, a nutritious food in spite of fat content.
